Leading so humans multiply AI´s potential

Unlock the transformative potential of human-AI teams
More detailed information
Something has gone wrong with AI. We´ve invested heavily; people are doing more; but only 1 in 20 organisations report a measurable ROI. The essence of the issue is that we´ve focused on how AI can multiply the potential of humans; we should be doing the absolute opposite. It´s human insight and ingenuity that will truly unlock the transformative potential of AI. However, our default decisions – as leaders and employees – are putting AI first, and in the process, diluting impact and energy. This talk outlines the emerging psychology of human-AI partnership. It provides three practical focus areas to take a very human focus to our AI transformation.
VELOCITY over VALUE
AI has made it astonishingly easy to start new things and amplify output: velocity has become the default operating mode. Everyone does more, faster; new work is spun up because it can be; workflows are accelerated (even if they never added a lot of value). In the words of tech re-engineering, cow paths are paved rather than reimagined. As speed increases, leaders have created the Efficiency Trap: banking every productivity gain as raised expectations. In doing this, time freed through AI is converted into busyness. In a world of infinite productivity, it´s through the translation of strategy into reimagined workflows and daily decisions that leaders create impact. Subtracting as quickly as you add; shaping the attention and productive power of your human-AI teams in real-time. In the end, no matter how generative AI is, value comes from persistently focusing your people on what matters, not accelerating what doesn´t.
MECHANICAL over HUMAN
As AI increases velocity, it’s easy for leaders to mistake fluency for insight. As people cognitively offload, teams are thinking, challenging and connecting less. For example, the homogeneity paradox means individuals appear more creative with AI, but that boost is 3x less than the decrease in diversity of ideas across the group. It all becomes more mechanical; losing some of our greatest human strengths. The critical depth that produces genuine insight, the originality that fosters innovation, the conversations that build meaning. In a world where AI produces competent output at scale, it´s our most human capabilities can't be commoditised; they drive impact and market value. It´s our most human work that captivates and engages us. The best leaders create the conditions which spark curiosity and raise everyone´s intellectual bar. To tap into the potential of partnering with AI in a way that makes work more human than it ever was.
ADAPTATION over CHANGE
Change has accelerated 5X; employee willingness to change has collapsed from 74% to 43%; FOBO (fear of becoming obsolete) has nearly doubled. The temptation is to drive harder: more communication, urgency, and pressure. But beneath the change fatigue is a deeper challenge: identity. When AI can approximate what makes your people valuable, when re-orgs and lay-offs are routine, 64% of workers job-hug in defensive self-preservation. Innovation and transformation stall. The answer isn't better change management; it´s supporting people to adapt…cognitively, behaviourally and emotionally…and then to keep evolving. Building the willingness to abandon expertise and be rubbish before being great. Establishing the rhythms of challenging assumptions, unlearning and experimenting with new habits. It involves great, open, and often tough conversations. Holding your own ego lightly, showing up without expertise, learning out loud to inspire other to move from identity protection to energetic adaptation.
Three things you'll take away
Awareness and language: AI leadership starts with awareness of the choices being made which put AI first, and why people are defaulting to those. It´ll give you a new language to help shine a more human light on what is unhelpful: pluscrastination, amplifatigue, and addification.
Practical strategies: Each section contains three, concrete strategies to activate more effective human-AI partnerships. Each of these is based on psychological research: the Big 3, critique clinics, habit sprints.
Mindset and energy: You´ll leave feeling more confident you can lead and support a more human AI transformation, more energized about the human-AI possibilities in the business and more curious about how you and your identity as a leader can evolve.
