Leading in Perpetual Liminality

Leading through uncertainty with human wisdom, imagination and consilience

More detailed information

In a world shaped by AI, the changing nature of work and profound social transformation, leadership is no longer about control or certainty. It is about navigating perpetual liminality: a continuous state of transition in which yesterday’s models no longer apply, while tomorrow’s reality has not yet emerged.

In this keynote, Katja Schipperheijn introduces Liminal Leadership as a way to lead in this continuous state of transition. At its heart is Human Wisdom, or Phronesis: bringing knowledge, experience, values and imagination together through consilience, so leaders can see beyond a single perspective and act wisely in complexity.

You’ll discover:

  • Why liminal leadership requires letting go of outdated assumptions and using uncertainty and imagination as a space for exploration and possibility

  • How Human Wisdom (Phronesis) helps us make better choices when data, technology or expertise alone cannot provide the answer

  • How to empower people and teams through learning and shared intelligence, both human and artificial

  • Which human competencies and mindsets help create resilient, inclusive and adaptable organisations

  • How to work with AI responsibly and future-oriented while protecting human agency, values and global ethics.

  • What all of this means for the future of work, leadership and the evolving relationship between people and intelligent technologies

Who is this keynote for?

For executives, leadership teams and anyone taking responsibility for direction, change or self-leadership. In perpetual liminality, leadership is not only a hierarchical role; it is the capacity to navigate uncertainty, make choices, and help yourself and others move in a positive direction.

Through Habit of Improvement and The Learning Mindset Organisation, Katja advises multinational organisations, governments, and leadership teams worldwide, translating complex technological and organisational challenges into practical strategies.

Her work is built on original models and concepts including Learning Mindset, Liminal Leadership, Cognitive Learning Ecosystems and The Paradigm of Learning Moments. These are grounded in years of international practice and research, complemented by global data from the Learning Mindset Amplifier, a diagnostic tool she developed herself, including the underlying algorithm. This rich foundation allows her to tailor every keynote and advisory engagement to the audience and context, connecting human competencies such as curiosity, imagination, openness, empathy, resilience and consilience with the uncertainty of perpetual liminal times.

Katja’s thinking is captured in her books The Learning Mindset: Combining Human Competencies with Technology to Thrive and Learning Ecosystems: Creating Innovative, Lean & Tech-driven Learning Strategies. The first edition of Learning Ecosystems was translated into multiple languages, while its extensively rewritten 2026 edition introduces new models such as Cognitive Learning Ecosystems and the Paradigm of Learning Needs as AI becomes increasingly predictive.

Her grounding is more technical than the field norm. Behind the human-centred perspective is a degree in Applied Economics, an MBA from Antwerp Management School and MIT Sloan executive certifications, including Learning Technologies and Algorithmic Business Thinking. This formal education is matched by a never-ending pursuit of practical widom and knowledge ranging from philosophy to cognitive architectures. Combined with her expertise in the psychology of sales, behavioural science and leadership development, this breadth allows her to move comfortably between how people think and decide, how organisations function, and the technologies reshaping both.

Katja is also deeply committed to social impact. Over the years, her work has reached more than 15,000 children. Today, she personally visits children around the world growing up in some of the most challenging circumstances, exploring how human competencies can help them learn, adapt, and engage with technology in ways that strengthen their future opportunities. Her work connects these experiences with the UN SDGs and with her broader belief that learning should be available to help every child navigate an increasingly complex world.

The insights Katja gains through her philanthropic work also shape her keynotes, helping audiences better understand different realities and expectations across generations. Booking Katja also extends beyond the stage, as part of her speaking fee contributes directly to the social projects she supports.
