Critical thinking in a world full of AI

Keeping your own judgement sharp in a hyperdigital world

More detailed information

Objective

We live in an age where information is always available, always sounds convincing and always comes from somewhere. The question is no longer how you get information. The question is whether you still know what you yourself think of it. This keynote sharpens your own critical voice again in an environment that overloads you more and more often.

“The art is not to turn every question mark into an exclamation point.”

Inside the session

There’s something fascinating about what has happened in recent years. People who are sceptical by nature, who have spent their whole lives learning to ask questions, now stare at a screen and adopt an algorithm’s output without thinking much about it. Have we suddenly become less intelligent? No, the technology is built so that our brain goes into overdrive. Overdrive means less room to think, to slow down and to look critically.

Algorithms and AI exploit our cognitive vulnerabilities. They show us more often what we already believe and confirm our worldview. They also sound convincing even when they generate the wrong result. Information comes in at a pace our brain can’t keep up with.

In this keynote Elke Van Hoof makes those mechanisms visible and recognisable. Participants discover common cognitive errors such as confirmation bias and overconfidence. With nine check questions, Elke brings back the critical thinker you once were.

What you’ll take away

  • How AI and algorithms shape your thinking, even when you don’t notice it.

  • The cognitive errors that occur most often in meetings and decisions.

  • Nine check questions for every source, every answer, every decision.

  • The difference between AI that sharpens you and AI that takes over your judgement.

  • More confidence in your own critical thinking in a hyperdigital world.
