America from Within: The World Behind the Headlines

An accessible look at American politics and society, and what they mean for Europe and your organisation.

More detailed information

Decisions made in Washington reach far beyond the United States. They shape international relations, economic expectations and the environment in which European organisations operate. Meanwhile, America’s political divisions and cultural tensions raise pressing questions. What drives the country? How can we understand the choices Americans make? And what do those choices mean for us?

In this keynote, Michiel Vos takes audiences beyond the daily news cycle. He explores polarisation in American society, the United States’ position on the world stage and its relationships with Europe, China and Russia. Throughout the talk, he connects political developments to their implications for international business and collaboration.

His personal experiences bring these themes to life. Drawing on stories from his life and work in America, he shows how politics, culture and society intertwine.

His delivery combines sharp analysis with vivid examples, humour and nuance, giving audiences the context to better understand the headlines.

What will the audience take away?

  • Greater insight into America’s political and social divisions.

  • A clearer understanding of the US role in international relations.

  • An understanding of how political decisions and economic developments affect organisations.

  • Greater awareness of cultural differences between Europe and the United States.

  • A broader perspective for interpreting and discussing American news.

This keynote is relevant to leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals working internationally, as well as broader audiences seeking to understand America’s influence on the world.

Michiel Vos helps audiences make sense of America. A Dutch-American journalist who has lived and worked in the United States for more than twenty years, he follows political and social developments firsthand. Based in New York, he brings these stories to Dutch and Belgian audiences, combining a European perspective with the experience of someone who calls America home.

Michiel is known for his contributions to talk shows and current affairs programmes, including Jinek, Beau, RTL Tonight and VRT. His strength lies in connecting the headlines to the bigger picture: what do elections, political tensions and cultural shifts reveal about America, and why do they matter to audiences in Europe?

His personal life also places him close to American politics. He is married to documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. He has worked with Alexandra on documentaries about the United States, gaining a close perspective on the people and institutions that shape the country.

In his book Vos in de VS, Michiel reflects on life in his adopted country. Through humour, sharp observations and encounters with public figures and everyday Americans, he explores the American dream and the contradictions of American society.

On stage, Michiel turns his knowledge and experience into engaging, accessible stories. Combining personal anecdotes with journalistic analysis, he makes complex subjects relatable to a broad audience. His keynotes help organisations understand American politics, international relations and the cultural differences that influence collaboration and business.
